Milestones and Highlights 2014 – 2019
In 2014 The NCPC-SA piloted Industrial Symbiosis as a special project. The Centre invested in the SYNERGie software management platform to facilitate and capture the progress of synergies at match-making – identifying synergies – workshops.
A national scoping study was completed to establish the best course for implementation of the IS Programme in the country and recommendations included the development of a National IS Strategy and a three-to-five-year-business plan.
A stakeholder workshop saw the establishment of the NCPC-SA National IS Programme. The IS steering committee comprised of representatives from:
- The Department of Environmental Affairs,
- The National Business Initiative,
- The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research,
- Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development,
- Gauteng Department of Economic Development,
- Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality Waste Management,
- Department of Economic Development and Trade and Investment (KZN) (TIKZN),
- GreenCape Western Cape Province
2015: the Gauteng Industrial Symbiosis Programme was adopted as a flagship programme of the NCPC-SA and the KwaZulu-Natal Industrial Symbiosis Programme was established.
2016: The Industrial Symbiosis Programme was boosted with the addition of the Switch Africa Green programme, with NCPC-SA receiving a grant to run IS services to small and micro enterprises.
2017: The IS Programme became one of the driver in the implementation of Eco-Industrial Parks Concept in the country, in a pilot project funded by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization and the NCPC-SA.
2018: the Mpumalanga Industrial Symbiosis Programme established and launched in partnership with the Mpumalanga Department of Economic Development and Tourism
2019: the Limpopo ….
