Chemicals, plastics fabrication, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals Sector
In 2008, these three sectors were identified by government as the key driver of the economy. The sectors dominate manufacturing in South Africa, adding more value to the economy than any other sector and accounting for over half of the jobs created by manufacturing as a whole. This is largely due to the fact that products of the primary chemical sector form the basis for almost every manufacturing activity in the country.
Historically the chemical sector has been seen as having a major impact on the environment, as well as being a significant consumer of energy, materials and water and consequently a major generator of waste (emissions, wastewater & solid waste).
