The National Cleaner Production Centre South African Case Studies

Through the use of case studies the National Cleaner Production Centre South Africa (NCPC-SA) show cases the benefits and application of Resource Efficient and Cleaner Production (RECP) methodologies.

The areas in which the RECP methodologies are applied are:

·         Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE),

·         Industrial Symbiosis Programme (IS Programme), and

·         Industrial Water Efficiency Project (IWE) Project. 

Distell Adam Tas

Distell employs about 5000 people and has an annual turnover of approximately R16 Billion. Two production processes are employed: Primary production involves raw material procurement, distillation and wine making, and Secondary production involves blending and bottling. Distell has 12 primary production and 9 secondary production sites across the country. The Adam Tas site in Stellenbosch, Western Cape, employs both processes.
 
Distell uses fossil fuels (to generate steam) and electricity as energy sources. Using 2009 as a base year, reduction targets of 25% for fossil fuel and 15% for electricity were set. By 2012 fossil fuel use had been reduced by 12,58% and electricity by 10,58%.
 
he IEE Project was approached by the Technical Manager of Secondary Production and the Corporate Environmental Manager, to assist them to establish an energy management system. Five employees attended the 2 day IEE EnMS training and two employees, Development Projects Engineer Bradley Mercuur and Environmental Controller Nadia Santera, were enrolled in the IEE Project’s Expert level EnMS training programme. Distell Adam Tas signed up as a Candidate Plant for EnMS expert level training in 2012 and was regarded as a pilot site for EnMS implementation within the Distell group.
 
Key Findings:
In the period 2012-2013 seven projects were undertaken, resulting in a saving of 825,760 kWh, or ZAR 698,526 p/a following an investment of ZAR 956,960 (payback period of 1.4 years). A reduction in GHG emissions of 726133 kg CO2 was achieved.
