12 Principles of Green Chemistry
Paul Anastas of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and American chemist John Warner created a simple checklist – 12 green chemical principles – to assist in reducing the environmental impact and potential negative health effects of producing chemicals. The principles are:
- Waste prevention instead of remediation
- Atom economy or efficiency
- Use of less hazardous and toxic chemicals
- Designing safer chemicals
- Safer solvents and auxiliaries
- Design for energy efficiency
- Use of renewable feedstocks
- Reduce derivatives
- Catalytic rather than stoichiometric reagents
- Design for degradation
- Real-time pollution prevention
- Safer chemistry for accident prevention
