The Rhodes Food Group is one of the oldest food producing companies in South Africa. The Group has eight production facilities and two agricultural farms. The ready-made meals and dairy (Ayrshire) facilities at Groot Drakenstein in the Western Cape participated in the IEE Project for energy systems optimisation interventions. The plant produces a diverse range of chilled and frozen fresh ready-made meals; and milk, cream, cheese, fresh pasta and sauces are produced here for leading South African retailer, Woolworths.

From its from three facilities in the Sundays River Valley between Kirkwood and Addo in the Eastern Cape, Sundays River Citrus Company (SRCC) packs and selectively de-greens citrus fruit for local and export markets.

The operations at SRCC are seasonal and follow the citrus-harvesting period between April and October each year.

Zimalco is the largest manufacturer of secondary aluminium products in sub-Saharan Africa. Specialising in the production of aluminium foundry alloys, powders and deoxidants, Zimalco is also South Africa’s only manufacturer of primary aluminium-based master alloys, hardeners and grain refiners. The Zimalco plant has a capacity in excess of 30 000 ton per year and employs more than 160 people.

In an effort to adopt energy management systems to improve energy effiency, Zimlaco contacted the NCPC-SA to enrol in the Industrial Energy Efficiency (IEE) Project’s EnMS programme.

Durbanville Hills is a premier wine-making estate in South Africa. The farming and wine-making business is operated by the Distell Corporation, which produces wines, spirits, ciders and other drinks. The Durbanville Hills plant is typical of small wineries in that energy usage varies during the two distinct seasons: harvesting and wine-making season; and storage season.

The Rhodes Food Group (RFG) produces canned deciduous fruit, citrus and pineapples, canned vegetables, tomato products, jams, juice concentrates and purees, prepared meals, pies and pastries, and a range of dairy products.
